Course Aim:
This course uses an integrated approach to teaching the reading, writing, speaking and thinking skills that first year students need in order to succeed in their academic work. Students are challenged to be independent thinkers by showing them how to organize information, interpret different perspectives, make inferences, synthesize complex issues and communicate their ideas clearly by drawing heavily on exciting topics to stimulate their interests and guide them into thinking, reading and writing critically in addition to developing their speaking and study skills.
Course contents:
Identify and use context clues, read for main idea (Skim), Find supporting details (Scan), Identify and use context clues, understand inferences, draw conclusions, recognize differences between fact, opinion and blend, recognize author’s tone and purpose, identify topic sentence, Synthesis information from readings, Present ideas on a topic from reading/different sources in speaking and write a complete essay.
